Solitude in UT to be acquired by Alterra Mountain Company; 30 resorts now owned by 2 companies

Earlier today, Alterra Mountain Company (the group behind the newly created Ikon Pass) announced that they will be acquiring Solitude Mountain Resort. Located in Utah, Solitude is located in the vicinity of Salt Lake City, very close to one of Alterra's other recent acquisitions, Deer Valley. The purchase price has not been disclosed, but the deal is expected to be completed in the Fall. Specifics on whether or not Solitude will be included in the Ikon Pass have not been released.

Back on June 4th, Vail Resorts announced the acquisition of 4 new ski resorts, including Sunapee and Okemo in New England. This brought Vail's total resort count to 17, and today's announcement brings Alterra to 13, meaning 30 ski resorts across North America are now owned and operated by 2 companies.

In a recent earnings call, Rob Katz, the CEO of Vail Resorts, indicated that they still have the appetite to acquire more mountains in North America. Alterra hasn't publicly commented on the topic, but it's safe to say that we can expect the trend of ski resort consolidation to continue.
